# Split a Batch Using a Subaccount

A subaccount lets you split a batch into smaller batches and hold them separately. You can then transfer exactly the batch you want.

{% hint style="info" %}
This is how you transfer the **first** units of a batch: a normal transfer always takes the last units. See [Before You Transfer: Batches and Conversion](/registry/transfers/before-you-transfer-batches-and-conversion.md) for why this matters.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Create a subaccount

Open the **Holdings** menu and select **Subaccount Registration** to create a new subaccount that will hold the split. Enter a subaccount name and a reason (only if needed), then select **Save**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the subaccount

The new subaccount appears on the **View Subaccount Balance** page.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Transfer to the subaccount

From the **Operations** menu, select **Initiate Transfer** to open the Holding Transfer page, then:

1. From Transfer Type, select **Transfer to Subaccount**.
2. Choose the **To Subaccount** from the drop-down and select **View Assets**.
3. Identify the holding batch to split, checking its serial number.
4. Enter the quantity to split.

{% hint style="info" %}
The split quantity is taken from the end of the serial number block.
{% endhint %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Example

In this example, 50 assets are split from the end of the 3769–4668 block.

![](https://2569783243-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FED6lPsyoF2iHXq92LOvD%2Fuploads%2FwvbX7cT0Vo5nwT7OY8if%2Fsplit-04-example.png?alt=media)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Result

The 3769–4668 block is reduced by 50, and a new block of 4619–4668 is created in the selected subaccount.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Transfer the batch you need

The resulting batches can now be transferred separately: see [Transfer Units to Another Account Holder](/registry/transfers/transfer-units-to-another-account-holder.md).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.eq-earth.com/registry/transfers/split-a-batch-using-a-subaccount.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
